Meet Saskia!

Meet Saskia from Saskia M. Photography

I fell in love with photography at a young age.  I remember admiring my mother’s camera (which was actually my grandfather’s camera that had been passed down to her) and asking to look through it.  I got my first camera when I was 7.  Since then, I have fallen more and more in love with what photography can do.  I am now in my fourth year as a wedding photographer and feel so blessed to have this job.  I remember my own wedding day felt like a lifetime of memories and emotions packed into one day.  I love that a wedding is filled with so much emotion.  I love that you never really know when those moments will be.  I love that it is my job to capture them.

Meet Alan from Puget Sound DJ

I’ve been passionate about music for as long as I can remember. I’ve been mixing music since back in the days when I tried to squeeze as many songs as I could onto a single 90-minute cassette tape. I’ve attended more than 300 concerts and collected thousands of CDs.

Becoming a DJ was a natural outgrowth of that passion. In 1997, three days before her wedding in rural Washington, a dear friend told me that her DJ had cancelled. She was frantic and asked if I could take over. I agreed. And we made it a great success. From then on, I began to DJ for many of my friends and enjoyed it so much that I chose it professionally. Today, I DJ weddings and all sorts of events — because I really love it.

I love talking to people about their musical tastes and goals for their event. I love the artistry of DJing. I love trying to understand what is motivating a particular crowd on a particular night to dance and have the best time possible.
Many of an event’s most special moments can come on the dance floor – from the first dance at a wedding to all the spontaneous dances where there’s a long, twisting congo line. I love looking out on a full dance floor and trying to make that quick decision about what will keep the people there.

Over the years, as I attended weddings, I’ve noticed that a lot of couples reported that they love their photographer, the florist, the caterer, the officiant etc. However, I would often hear couples frustrated that the DJ only played the songs that he or she wanted, rather than what the couple wanted. You’ll never hear anyone say that about me. I’m committed to talking the time to listening to you and crafting an event around your goals and preferences.

I believe weddings and receptions are magical times and deserve to be treated as such. They reflect the uniqueness of the couple — their life experience, their friends and the music that is special to them. Bringing all those things together only happens once. You should get to hear and dance to the music that is meaningful to you.

I spent 11 years in the corporate world, planning numerous large events, including one with Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer as a speaker, so I’m very familiar with the big-picture of an event.

I’ll spend as much time as we need planning in advance so you get exactly what you want. Usually, this will involve a relaxed in-person meeting and subsequent communications by email and phone.

On your special day, it’s important for you to be able to let go of “wedding planning” and just enjoy yourself. So it’s important for your wedding vendors to be able to work together as a team. I love working with photographers, videographers, caterers, facilities managers – all of whom have their own roles and goals — to make sure everything goes smoothly. In the midst of chaos, I have a very calm and easy-going, personality that makes me easy for you and every person working on your event to get along with.

Our Latest SWIP Florist: Laurel Mitchell

Meet Laurel from Laurel’s Floral Decor

Laurel Mitchell has been in the design industry for over 20 years. Her love for design truly took a new turn when she began working for Molbak’s Nursery as a Visual Designer. She was hired onto the Visual Design team, which included many large scale floral displays for the Flower and Garden Show, The Seattle Convention Center and window displays for the downtown Seattle Bon Marche. She was also involved in creating product displays which were photographed for the Molbak’s Quarterly Catalog and published advertisements for the Seattle Times and Pacific Northwest Magazine.

Her love for flowers and plants led her to formalize her education and earn her floral certification. This in turn prompted her to start her own business in 2005! Her floral experience includes numerous weddings and receptions at some of Seattle’s most beautiful venues! She has also designed floral arrangements for Destination Weddings at Lake Las Vegas, Caesars Palace and recently she was honored to have been chosen to create the Entrance Lobby Design at the MGM Grand for the Academy of Country Music Awards!

We take pride in giving each bride and groom special attention, making sure that their vision becomes a reality! Your special day is so important to us, and with Laurel’s eye for design and detail, she will personally work with you to create the wedding you always dreamed of!

Why hire a professional photographer for your wedding?

In what is perhaps the best researched article I have seen, Cody Ellerd of Seattle Bride Magazine,  describes why couples should turn to professional photographers for their wedding through his own experience.   I’ve included just a few snippets of his thoughts that I thought rang especially true:

I consider myself a pretty good amateur photographer. I’ve taken a couple of classes, I have a nice Nikon D60 and, as a professional travel writer, I’ve even had a few of my shots make magazine covers and pages. If you didn’t budget for a professional photographer at your wedding, I’m the friend you might call to take pictures.

So when Seattle Bride sent me to the late-winter wedding of Vicky Wu and Chris Nicoll to shoot alongside Joey Hong of John & Joseph Photography, a local award-winning team of two brothers who have been shooting commercial, fashion and wedding photography for more than eight years, I was curious to see how well I could keep up with a seasoned pro.

From the moment we started shooting in the bride and groom’s room at Hotel 1000, I was floored. “Vicky, look down at your shoulders…put a gentle smile on your lips. Chris, look straight at my lens—no, smile. Relax your forehead.” Joey’s attention to such minute detail went way beyond “Say cheese” and brought out the couple’s absolute best. He knew how to manipulate the room’s light and reflective surfaces in ways I never would have dreamed of, transforming what I thought was an unremarkable setting into a photo studio with endless possibilities.

I recently talked with a young woman who was married at the World Trade Center in Seattle. She told me she was seeking some professional portraits of herself because of the “nightmare experience” she had with the amateur photographer who covered her wedding.  I greatly sympathized with her.  It’s a responsibility, as a professional, that I do not take lightly! Spend some time discovering the style and approach you prefer your wedding photographer to have. Do you want someone who’s a “fly on the wall” and captures events as the enfold naturally, or someone who helps guide and direct you throughout the day for more stylistic imagery – perhaps some of both?  Do you lean towards tranditional or modern and edgy? What photos inspire you? Find the photographer that has the syle you are looking for and then trust them entirely. You will love the results.
